Break Away

Break Away was the first family placement scheme for children with an intellectual disability to be established in Ireland and has been the springboard for the development of many other schemes. The Break Away scheme offers short breaks and holidays to persons with an intellectual disability. It involves ‘Host Carers’ in the community taking a person with an intellectual disability into their home for a short period, in order to give them a holiday and their family a break from the constant care of their child. A break can consist of anything from a day, an overnight, a weekend, or even a week, depending on what suits the person and his/her family’s circumstances.
